Students from the University of Notre Dame have initiated another call to implement a porn filter on campus Wi-Fi to help classmates with pornography addictions, a trend sweeping across campuses nationwide, and to protect women from sexual exploitation and sexual violence. A 2,000+ signature petition has circulated campus, yet Notre Dame administration has avoided action since closing the discussion last spring. To push forward, Students for Child-Oriented Policy hosted activist Donna Rice Hughes as part of the Center for Conservative Women’s lecture circuit to raise awareness of the issue.
To present a new side of the debate, Students for Child-Oriented Policy requested Donna Rice Hughes, who had called on Notre Dame President in February, to present the business and legal case for why corporations and academic institutions should filter their public Wi-Fi. After the lecture on Wednesday, October 9, Notre Dame administration met with Donna Rice Hughes and Students for Child-Oriented Policy to discuss a future with a campus-wide Wi-Fi porn filter. Students, as well as Hughes, remain hopeful for change.
Donna Rice Hughes, President and CEO of Enough is Enough, is an internationally known Internet safety expert, author, and speaker on the frontlines to raise awareness about the dangers of Internet pornography. The Center for Conservative Women, an organization for conservative women on college campuses, partnered with Hughes to offer a national voice to Notre Dame students and combat the normalization of porn on campuses – a problem often perpetuated by campus organizations and administrations.
